How Do Septic Systems Impact Water Quality?

Many people in rural Clackamas County get their drinking water from wells. In urban areas, however, many get their drinking water from the Clackamas River, Alder Creek, or the Molalla River. Failing septic systems that are not properly treating water can release nutrients, pathogens, and other contaminants into ground water that can lead to our streams and rivers. This will impact the health of wildlife and recreational user. Contaminated water is more difficult and expensive to clean, placing a burden on those providing drinking water. Healthy, clean water is everyone’s responsibility!
