Bluebirds and Fairgoers Both Win

Bluebird Nesting Box

Six lucky people won bluebird nesting boxes in the Clackamas County Soil and Water Conservation District’s habitat-themed booth at the 2012 Clackamas County Fair in Canby. Participants entered their names for a chance to bring home a birdhouse specially designed for the Western and Mountain Bluebirds in our region. One winner a day was drawn.

Bluebird populations have been on the decline for several reasons, including urbanization, removal of dead trees (nesting habitat), use of pesticides, popularity of vinyl and metal fencing as opposed to wooden fencing, and competition with non-native European Starlings and English Sparrows. Both of these non-native birds are cavity nesters and are aggressive competitors for nesting sites and food.

Interested in where bluebird nesting boxes may be used? Habitat is key! The rural countryside in many parts of Clackamas County with some scattered trees is often ideal.
